Karen Dunlop is a qualified and experienced flute teacher, who offers lessons in Vasse, Busselton under the business “South West Flute Lessons”. Karen is an Accredited Teaching Member of the West Australian Music Teachers’ Association.
I began teaching flute as a high school student when a teacher at my former primary school requested I teach some flute students there. I loved doing this, and whilst continuing to teach, I went on to complete a Bachelor of Music at Melbourne University, and my AMusA and LMusA on flute with Alan Hardy as my teacher. Fascinated by the ease that good posture and technique allows, I spent three years studying Alexander Technique for Musicians with Vivian Mackie and Duncan Woodcock. This helped to inform my approach to establishing good set up and technique from the start, not only to make playing as easy as possible, but also to prevent injury. I have experience teaching younger students from my study of the Suzuki Method with Julia Breen and Suzuki Music Victoria. I have also had the pleasure of working with students returning to flute as adults. I have taught music privately as well as for music schools. My teaching style brings everything I have learned and is further influenced by each student’s individuality; what inspires them to play?
