Micheál McCarthy is an Aural Training/Musicianship, Music Theory and Choral specialist. An accredited WAMTA member, he studied violin, piano and double bass at the Cork School of Music for 14 years. He graduated with the highest award from the Kodály Institute (Liszt Academy, Hungary). He is Director of the Cottage Music Institute, and he offers group Musicianship tuition and lessons for students preparing for auditions, exams, recitals and scholarships.
He has held senior lecturing positions at the Canberra School of Music, ANU, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), specialising in Aural Training, Music Theory and Choral Conducting.
He was a consultant to the Singapore Ministry of Education for their ‘creativity through music education’ project. In 2018, Micheál was ‘classroom music and choir mentor’ for the ABC’s 3-part documentary TV series, ‘Don’t Stop the Music’. He was jury member at the Musica Viva ‘Strike a Chord’ Chamber Music competition Grand Final at the Melbourne Recital Centre in 2023.
